15 June 2009 - Achievers Students Help to Launch Global Entrepreneurship Week

Achievers Students Help to Launch Global Entrepreneurship Week

Last week, during World Trade Week, a group of Achievers International students traded products at the London Stock Exchange to help begin the count-down to Global Entrepreneurship Week in November and encourage others to trade around the globe.

The young people from Skinners' Company's School for Girls in London, set up a stall selling products imported from their partner school, Sophie-Charlotte-Oberschule in Berlin, who they have been trading with for seven months. The students started their global enterprise by selling German snack products such as Corny cereal bars, Knoppers and Yogurettes, and they plan to trade other items such as ‘Berlin bears’, which most of their customers will not be familiar with.

The partnership between Skinners’ and Sophie-Charlotte is now coming towards the end of its first year and both schools have had excellent results. They were even able to organise an exchange trip last Global Entrepreneurship Week to help kick start their partnership and participate in the launch of Achievers International. They have had some excellent press coverage, appearing on both the BBC World Class website and the World Trade Week website.

Lesley David (13), a student at Skinners’ School, said: "Taking part in the project has enhanced my English and German skills and I have learnt a lot about business studies and global trade. I now feel inspired and have the confidence to think about setting up my own business one day. "

Lord Mandelson, First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills said: "Enterprise has the power to inspire young people and create a 'can do' culture something which is key to the UK’s future growth and success in the current economic climate.

"I congratulate these young entrepreneurs for showing great flair and initiative and in helping to bring World Trade Week to life".

World Trade Week, the first event of its kind in the UK, took place from 8 to 12 June, highlighting the importance of global trade in creating jobs and growth in the current economic climate. It is part of a Government drive to maintain open and fair markets and resist protectionism in the face of a global downturn and falling international trade flows.

Achievers will be holding one of the feature events for Global Entrepreneurship Week in November and involved in World Trade Week again next year, so keep an eye out for more information. You can read more about Global Entrepreneurship Week here and World Trade Week here.
